Committees

Following its mission to Feed the Need of the congregation, those who live in the local community and further away, the First United Methodist Church channels gifts of time, talent and treasure given by church members and guests into ministries, Administrative Committees (church membership required) and Program Committees (church membership not required) in order to benefit countless individuals and families year-round.

Administrative Committees require all members to be official, professed members of the church and focus work on managing the day-to-day operations of the church and its congregation.  

 

Administrative Council Board

The church council is the administrative agency of the charge conference to envision, plan, implement, and annually evaluate the ministry of the congregation. (The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church, 2016, ¶252) The chair of this group is elected annually by the charge conference (¶251.3).  In addition to the Chair, the council membership consists of the Vice Chair, Recording Secretary, Pastor, Music Director, Lay Leaders, Chair of Board of Trustees, Committee Chairs and a Youth Representative.

 

2020 Meeting Schedule: 3rd Monday of each month, 7pm in the FUMC Conference Room; 

Meetings are open to members of the congregation unless Chairperson calls a closed executive session.

Lay Leadership

In the United Methodist Church the lay leader refers to a principal layperson in a local church, district or Annual Conference who represents and leads the laity in ministry. It is an elected position, and lay leaders serve on most church committees.  An effective lay leader functions as the primary representative and role model of Christian discipleship and faith lived out in the church and in daily life.

According to a job description provided by the United Methodist Church website, lay leaders have multiple responsibilities including:

*  work with the pastor to fulfill the mission and vision of the congregation;
*  work with the pastor and other leaders to launch or strengthen ministries that build discipleship;
*  assist in advising the church council about opportunities available and the needs expressed for a more effective lay ministry of the
    church in the community; and, 
*  plan with other leaders in the congregation for celebrating the ministry of laypeople throughout the year and especially on Laity
    Sunday.
 

Finance Committee

According to the description provided by the United Methodist Church Discipleship Ministries, the Finance Committee proposes a budget; then raises, manages, and distributes the financial resources of the congregation to support and strengthen the mission and ministry of the congregation.

Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC)

Acting Chairperson: Kristen Sturtevant

According to the United Methodist Church Discipleship Ministries, an effective Staff Parish Relations Committee builds a strong positive relationship between staff and the congregation so that the congregation makes disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. This committee will work with the lead pastor and other staff to fulfill legal and ethical responsibilities related to staff.

2020 Meeting Schedule:  4th Monday of each month.  Meetings are closed—non-members of the committee may request to appear at a meeting for a special purpose by contacting the Pastor or Chair in advance.

Board of Trustees

According to the United Methodist Church Discipleship Ministries, effective trustees serving on the Board of Trustees, will function as Christian stewards of property God has entrusted to the congregation. This includes supervising and maintaining both the physical property of the congregation and gifts made to the congregation so that the ministries of the congregation can be effective and all legal requirements related to the property are satisfied.  Members on the Board of Trustees are nominated, elected and are asked to serve for a term of at least 3 years.  The Board of Trustees may have a maximum of 9 members + a Lay Leader and the Pastor. 

 

2020 Meeting Schedule:  3rd Tuesday of each month, 7pm at FUMC;

Meetings are open to any church member interested in attending; however, guests may not vote and must request permission from the Chairperson to speak about any subject the Board is discussing.

Program Committees do not require church membership to participate on the committee (with the exception of the Chairperson).  Program Committees focus work on meeting the spiritual, personal, and social needs of the congregation through a variety of ministries, groups, classes, studies, activities, and events taking place throughout the year.

According to the United Methodist Church Discipleship Ministries, the ministry of Christian education and formation is the foundation for lifelong learning and growth toward a mature and vital faith. With intentional learning and Christian formation, the Christian Education Committee provides opportunities to help members and guests become the people God calls them to be and develop gifts and strengths for encouraging and leading others to the same strong faith.  The Christian Education Committee takes a team approach in order to ensure quality Christian education is available and engaging to members & guests of all ages, background and abilities.

 

2020 Meeting Schedule:  2nd Sunday of every month following conclusion of 10am service;

Meetings are open to anyone interested in attending at any time.

Nurture, Outreach, Witness (N.O.W.) Committee

Teams making up the N.O.W. Committee will address the concerns and conditions of people in the congregations and local community so that they may grow in their spiritual lives and become better equipped for life as Christian disciples. Leaders of nurture, outreach, and witness will work together to plan and implement ministries that help the church fulfill its mission.

FUMC is particularly proud of its local missions that help to Feed the Need in the greater Rochester community as well as for people in need worldwide.  Examples of FUMC work that meets the needs of our neighbors and those farther away, are: 

*  Fellowship Kitchen serves meals to approximately 250 people each week throughout the year—held Tuesday, Thursday & Sunday evenings 5-6 pm.  Scroll down for more information on this ministry.

*  Project Linus provides homemade blankets to children in need. Blankets are made and donated year-round.  To date, the FUMC Project Linus chapter has donated ## blankets that were lovingly made by adults and children donating time, talent and compassion to Project Linus.  Learn more about this national non-profit organization at:  www.projectlinus.org   

*  The NOW Casserole Committee provides hot & healthy meals to church member families, guests and community members when they are most in need and, temporarily, are not able to do so on their own for reasons such as health challenges, accidents, times of grief or other personal struggles. 

 *  FUMC co-sponsors the Annual Community Photography Show, along with Rochester Main Street.  FUMC proudly hosts this annual event at its 34 South Main Street, Rochester location for the greater Rochester community.  Click here to learn more and find the application on the Community Photography Show page.

Under the direction of a Chairperson and along with the Pastor, the Worship Committee takes a team approach to worship planning.  The Worship Committee members work together to craft meaningful worship experiences for all congregants of the church.

United Methodist Women (UMW)

Founded in 1869, United Methodist Women (UMW) is the largest denominational faith organization for women with approximately 800,000 members whose mission is fostering spiritual growth, developing leaders and advocating for justice.  It is the only official organization for women within the United Methodist Church.  Find more information about the work done by UMW nationwide at www.unitedmethodistwomen.org.

FUMC is proud to have an active UMW chapter that serves the congregation and community needs.

Fellowship Kitchen

Fellowship Kitchen is able to serve meals to approximately 250 people each week throughout the year as a result of dedicated volunteer teams and generous food donations from local businesses.
